IHT, ELMs and Flood Recovery

It has been a difficult week for the farming industry and we are really feeling for a lot of you out there.
The announcement in last week's budget with the drastic change to IHT reliefs together with the cap on delinked payments after a couple of really difficult harvests and wide-spread stock disease issues is a real blow.
On a sunnier note, the Government has set aside £2.4billion for DEFRA who are continuing with pushing Environmental Land Management Schemes including SFI agreements. It is well worth looking into those if you haven't already.
Lastly, you may have received a welcome surprise email this morning from the RPA with a Recovery Fund payment. The extreme wet weather of winter 23/24 has resulted in a one-off payment to around 13,000 farm businesses to help them restore farmland following flooding and high rainfall. Payment of this will be made within 28 days of receiving that email.

Michelmas

Michaelmas Day is nearly upon us, a quarter day when historically servants were hired, school terms started, and rents were due. Many rents are still collected and tenancies end on this day with notices needing to be served before the 29th September.
An old saying of "if you eat goose on Michaelmas Day you will never lack money all year" meant that often tenant farmers presented geese to their landlords. This was sometimes stipulated in their tenancy agreements - not a clause we include these days!
'Cheerful Charlie'

We had a lovely evening in the courtyard at the Stables at Sansaw for the end of harvest (nearly!) celebrations by kind invitation of Ceres Rural. 'Cheerful Charlie' of Clarkson's Farm fame welcomed us with drinks and delicious canapes.
It was wonderful to see lots of familiar faces and meet some new ones too. The sun shone and it was a beautiful evening - a nice change to be able to be at an event outside! We look forward to working further with Ceres Rural in the future.
